Iraq is a disaster. Iran goes nuclear. Israel is demoralized and the US is divided. The Dutch VPRO program Tegenlicht [backlight] focuses for six weeks at Judgment Square; the Mideast, and describes developments and possibel future scenarios. This week the Israel lobby in the US. For how realistic is it for Americans to continue their undivided support for Israel, now the fuse to the Mideastern powder keg is getting shorter and shorter? Which role is played by the interests of Israeli interests in the US relationship with Iraq and Iran? How infinite is the Israeli - US relationship? Can critical questions about this mutual association be asked, or is the Israel Lobby so strong both economically and politically, that criticism towards Israel is taboo? And what happens to those who in spite of the taboo insist at making the unspeakable a subject of discussion? In March 2006, the American political scientists John Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) and Steven Walt (Harvard) the controversial article 'The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy'. They accused the Israel Lobby of being partly guilty of the fact that the US launched a war against Iraq, against America's own interests. Together with the political rearrangements in the American Congress and the ever-widening Iraqi swamp, this accusation has contributed to the growing polarization in the debate about the US Mideast policy. Tegenlicht [The Dutch producers] talks with implicated individuals. Convinced advocates of the intimate bond between the US and Israel point at common political interests (such as the neoconservative Jew Richard Perle [Also known as 'The Prince of Darkness], or the presumed kinship of faith (Evangelist John Hagee). At AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) the most important lobby's yearly congress in Washington. Tegenlicht documented the zeal with which also American politicians defend Israeli interests and urge for action against Iran. Critics of the Israel Lobby who are being inteviewed: The American member of Congress Earl Hilliard from Alabama wanted a dialogue with the Arab world and was beaten by his opponent who received $300,000 from AIPAC for his campaign. Jewish historian Tony Judt who dared suggest that Israel is rapidly becoming a war mongering and intolerant religion driven ethno state. Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth [Jewish] who became a personal target after reporting on the last years' war in Lebanon. The former official Israel peace broker Daniel Levy tells us why he thinks that the lobby's actions are a danger to Israel in the end. Finally, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson Chief of Staff for former foreign secretary Colin Powell explains which role the Jewish lobby has played for the invasion of Iraq, AIPAC, the American Congress, the White House and even Israel, and how they have ended up in a mutually suffocating embrace.
